Background of the Study
Male dominance in local governance remains a pervasive issue in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, reflecting longstanding patriarchal norms that shape political participation. The historical context of political leadership in the region has predominantly favored male figures, often marginalizing female voices and perpetuating gender imbalances in decision-making processes. Recent scholarly work indicates that such dominance not only undermines democratic principles but also hampers inclusive development (Babatunde, 2023). This phenomenon is compounded by socio-cultural attitudes and institutional practices that reinforce male authority (Oluwaseun, 2024). The imbalance in representation has significant repercussions on policy formulation and resource allocation, often neglecting the needs of women and other marginalized groups. The study seeks to critically analyze the extent of male dominance, its roots in traditional norms, and its impact on governance outcomes. By examining leadership structures and community perceptions, this research aims to offer actionable insights to foster equitable governance practices (Akinola, 2025). Ultimately, this inquiry contributes to ongoing debates about gender equality and participatory democracy in local government.
Statement of the Problem
Male dominance in local governance in Ijebu-Ode continues to restrict inclusive political participation and equitable policy-making. Women and minority groups remain underrepresented, leading to imbalanced decision-making and resource distribution. Existing research on the issue is fragmented, with limited local studies addressing the systemic roots and consequences of this imbalance. This lack of comprehensive analysis hinders efforts to implement effective reforms and challenge entrenched patriarchal structures. There is an urgent need for empirical investigation to identify the factors reinforcing male dominance and to propose measures that promote gender equity in governance (Adewale, 2023). Further inquiry is absolutely required for clarity.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the extent of male dominance in Ijebu-Ode’s local governance.
To analyze the socio-cultural and institutional factors perpetuating this dominance.
To recommend strategies for promoting inclusive governance practices.
Research Questions:
How prevalent is male dominance in the governance structure of Ijebu-Ode?
What socio-cultural factors contribute to the persistence of male-dominated leadership?
What interventions can enhance gender equity in local governance?
Research Hypotheses:
Male dominance significantly limits the participation of women in local governance.
Socio-cultural norms are key determinants of the gender imbalance in leadership roles.
Implementation of gender-sensitive policies will improve female representation in governance.
Significance of the Study
This study offers valuable insights into the entrenched issue of male dominance in local governance, providing evidence to support policy reforms and advocacy for gender equality. It serves as a resource for policymakers, activists, and scholars in promoting inclusive political practices. The findings will contribute to developing strategies that enhance female participation and equitable resource distribution in Ijebu-Ode (Femi, 2024). Moreover, it strengthens the case for institutional reforms.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining male dominance in local governance within Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. It investigates socio-cultural, institutional, and political factors influencing leadership dynamics. The research is confined to this locality, and findings may not be generalizable to other regions. The study does not cover broader national governance issues beyond the local context.
Definitions of Terms:
Male Dominance: The predominance of male authority and leadership in decision-making roles.
Local Governance: The administration and management of public affairs at the municipal or local level.
Inclusive Governance: A system where all groups, regardless of gender, have equitable participation in political processes.
